Ainsdale Sands, Southport – Child-friendly beach
On a glorious summer's day, we set the sat-nav for Ainsdale, one of the largest areas of wild duneland left in Britain. You can enter the reserve from the beach or one of the numerous access points. We actually drove onto the sands, which was great fun for the little ones, though at one point we were concerned we'd get stuck (don't worry, there's a jeep going up and down pulling out any stranded vehicles!). Formby Point Red Squirrel Reserve
This reserve is National Trust owned and includes a pine forest squirrel reserve and Formby Sands. This is uncommercialised stunning natural coast without a pier or prom in sight. If you're heading to the squirrel reserve first then park under the trees, but if you are intending to take a Crackerjack-worthy collection of items onto the beach then it is better to park a little closer and walk back to the squirrels unladen. St Annes
St Annes is a much smaller, quieter beach resort than neighbouring Blackpool but still has the pier and promenade, with all the attractions that young children love at the seaside. A day trip here is a regular occurrence in our household. We usually park in the pay and display car park by the Beach Terrace, a lovely stand-alone cafe with great views about 500m south of the pier - ideal for a quick cup of tea before you start.
